Letter,1919, April 18, New York City. [to] Mr. Edwin Markham, Staten Island, N.Y. / Roger Lewis. 1919.

Roger made arrangements for Edwin to speak at the Eldridge Street University Settlement House. They would like him to read some poems, especially "The Man with the Hoe. They are very excited about his vist. He asks if Whittys"s poem came and he declined Miss Phillips. I believe it was about a Poe print.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
